EV Charging for Businesses: Five Factors to Build Your Business Case

Electric vehicle charging stations (EVCS) are more than just hardware designed to recharge your “computer server on wheels” (my definition of an EV); they’re a BIG deal. Gone are the days when striking a bargain for an 8-hour, Level 1 EVCS from Amazon would suffice. Now, Level 2 chargers for residential and commercial settings are the standard.

If you are a procurement professional aiming to purchase one or more charging stations, then you should know your needs, options, and goals to build a solid business case before investing in your EVCS.

Be sure to consider these five aspects when making your choice:

  • Who is your end-user? - Tenants, employees, customers, constituents, etc.

  • How will EV chargers help you achieve your business’ end game? - Ask yourself: are you installing chargers to attract or retain tenants? Are you hoping to hire top recruits? Will your program boost brand awareness to bring in more customers?

  • Your Budget – The model and number of units you plan to install will determine the budget of your project. The good news is that you may be able to offset your costs through tax credits and incentives, rebates, and citywide make-ready programs.

  • To Lease or Buy? – How do you plan to purchase and pay off these chargers? For instance, will your charging site attract an advertiser’s target demographic? If so, the foot traffic and impressions may be so valuable that you could score advertorial charging models for free. Do you expect to lease your chargers and pay the expense through your Common Area & Maintenance costs? Or, can you purchase your chargers outright at the beginning of your development project and factor the costs into your budget and property valuation?

  • Legislative Compliance & Benefits – How will changes in legislation impact your purchasing decisions? Upcoming legislation may require a specific ratio of EV chargers with respect to overall parking spaces or building size. If you are considering LEED construction, EV charging is a simple way to earn points.
